Walkers' long search for a new crisp flavour is over after the company named Pulled Pork in a Sticky BBQ Sauce as the winner of its Do Us A Flavour campaign.
The meat-flavoured crisps beat off competition from other entries such as Hot Dog and Ketchup, Cheesy Beans on Toast, Steak Fajita, Ranch Raccoon and Chip Shop Chicken Curry. The company launched the six new flavours in July and asked the public to vote for their favourite. Pulled Pork was the runaway winner gaining 26 per cent of the public vote and landed creator Paul Rothwell a £1 million prize.
It brings to an end Walkers' search to find a new flavour which was first launched in January. The crisp company asked the public to come up with suggestions of what could be used as a permanent flavour. From the 1.2 million entries, including some as bizarre as Piri Piri Pigeon with Sour Cream and Roast Pork and Toffee Apple, it was whittled down to six.
The judging panel, which included comedian David Walliams and Michelin-starred chef Marco Pierre White, handed the decision over to the public who deemed Pulled Pork to be the top flavour. Not only did it introduce a new flavour into the UK snack market but made the creator a millionnaire.
Mr Rothwell, from Westcliff-On-Sea, chose pulled pork because he saw it as a major trend across the UK and had seen it used in many cooking programme.
Speaking after his win, Mr Rothwell said: "I can't believe I have won £1 million. You always dream about what you would do with such a large amount of money and now that dream has become a reality. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me, I'm over the moon."
The other finalists all received £10,000 as a runners-up prize. Walkers will now roll out the new flavour in packs across the UK.
