Burton’s Biscuits ramping up manufacturing to meet demand

Burton's Biscuits has announced that it will be ramping up its manufacturing processes to meet the growing demand for biscuits.

The company, which produces brands such as Wagon Wheels, Maryland Cookies, Dodgers and Cadbury biscuits, has stated that it will embark on a major investment programme that will improve operations at its facilities across the country. The firm will be providing £13.5 million to aid development of new products. This goes alongside the £12.5 million that has already been pumped into its supply chain in 2012. The latest round is designed at satisfying customer as well as driving continued growth within the company.

International sales have been cited as a main factor behind this latest decision and the money will go towards new technology which will be introduced across all of Burton's sites. The main facility in Llantarnam, Wales, will pilot new control room technology which also keeps a close eye on the production process that is seen throughout the firm's workings.

Neil Grocock, Burton's chief supply chain officer, said: "Continued investment in our supply chain and manufacturing capabilities is central to Burton’s vision for being a brand-focused business, able to swiftly respond to changing market dynamics and bring new products to market quicker than any other company in the biscuit market."

Burton's decision comes in the wake of research by Mintel, which showed that Brits are developing a bigger appetite of biscuits. The study noted that 70 per cent of young adults in the nation are the largest demographic for those consuming these snacks on a regular basis.

Alex Beckett, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel, said: "The youth of Britain is growing up immersed in digital media, text-speak and cutting-edge gadgetry but this doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate a good old-fashioned Custard Cream.

"They may lack TV support or big-name brands, but the humble Bourbon, Malted Milk and Custard Cream are cherished by teens and students."

Burton's stated that new products and formats will be ready for sale in the coming months.
