British Sugar and Dairy Crest jointly won the Judge’s Star Performer Award at Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards (FMEAs) - a prestigious event that is widely recognised as the industry’s Oscars.
British Sugar was founded in 1936, originally named the British Sugar Corporation, when the British parliament nationalised the sugar beet crop processing industry. The company has recently been struggling because of the decision to remove the EU’s sugar regime - some sites were closed in this period.
The honour was bestowed upon British Sugar for its skill, foresight and determination that has allowed it to manage the changes that have been made within the industry because of the upcoming removal of the European Union’s (EU) sugar regime, set for 2017.
Dairy Crest, an integrated dairy business, was also chosen to share the award with British Sugar. The company was recognised because of its supplier initiative that was designed to to secure its continued success, while still offering a fair price to the farmers that they work with.
On the same night, Dairy Crest collected the highest accolade at the Sustainability Leader Awards. It picked up the prize for stakeholder engagement in its supply chain, coming ahead of its fellow nominees: Marks & Spencer, First Milk and Asda.
Mark Allen, chief executive of Dairy Crest, said: “At Dairy Crest, “Doing the Right thing” for our farmers, consumers, employees and business is our clear business strategy. We know that for the future of our business we need a healthy, sustainable dairy sector.”
British Sugar’s talent development manager, Alison Hollas and Dairy Crest’s chief executive, Mark Allen collected the awards on behalf of their respective employers.
Paul Wilkinson, lead judge, said: “Faced with impossible dilemma of choosing between two equally fantastic companies that were doing something quite special – albeit in very different areas – for the first time the judges decided to make a joint award.”
The Judge’s Star Performer Award was created to celebrate the achievement of food or drink manufacturers in one particular area of excellence.
